Festive surprise for Higginbottom

There was a wonderful musical surprise at the door for Gordon and Sylvia Higginbottom as some old friends popped along to give their season greetings.

The ensemble surprised Gordon and Sylvia Higginbottom

Gordon Higginbottom, one of the true 'greats' of the brass banding world recently enjoyed a surprise festive visit to his home.

It was organised by former Grimethorpe Colliery Band horn player Helen Varley who was joined by Phil and Claire Chalk, John and Jasmine Squires-Evans, Greg Patmore and Ian Holland, who popped along to perform Christmas carols for Gordon and his wife Sylvia.

Also with them was Colin Aspinall, who along with Gordon is the last remaining original member of the celebrated James Shepherd Versatile Brass ensemble.

Wonderful

After the playing there was plenty of great chat and reminiscences to go with the fantastic tea and cakes provided by Sylvia, who later posted on the Higginbottom's Facebook page: "Special thanks to these wonderful brass musicians for coming to play for Gordon. We both enjoyed your playing, visit and friendship. Wishing you all a happy Christmas and New Year."
