German tenor horn player Anabel Voigt continues to make a mark with her pioneering approach to recordings and performance.
Having graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and completing her Masters at the RNCM in Manchester, the former Tredegar and Hammonds player has gained critical acclaim for her musical approach to showcasing the tenor horn to a wider musical audience.
Studio recording
'When the Tenor Horn Sounds' is her new CD studio recording, one with the aim she told 4BR, "to broaden the instrument's artistic visibility, positioning it on the concert stage alongside classical solo instruments and exploring repertoire outside its usual role in the brass band."
The recordings were made in July in collaboration with World of Sound, and sees her accompanied by pianist Jonathan Fisher. The recording features a new transcription of Ravel's 'Vocalise-Etude en forme de habanera', as well as the complete 'Sonata' by Paul Hindemith — the first time it has been recorded on the instrument.
Voigt is a former member of the European Youth Brass Band and the World Youth Brass Band, and in recent years has pursued a distinctive solo, pedagogical, and research-oriented career.
Repertoire
Her debut solo album 'Farbenspiel' (2024) alongside these new recordings exemplify her commitment to continuously expanding the instrument's repertoire, and which has seen her gain numerous awards and accolades, including the Craxton Memorial Trust Award and First Prize at the Berlin International Classic Music Competition.
In addition, she regularly teaches at brass band camps in Germany and Switzerland and since autumn 2025, has been undertaking a further Master's degree in Music Physiology in Freiburg im Breisgau, combining artistic practice with scientific research.
