Trombone player Ian Stewart, one of the longest-serving members of Friary Brass, has decided to step down from playing after 20 years of outstanding commitment.
Originally booked as a CD recording dep, he enjoyed the experience so much that he remained — and has since been an ever-present under four resident conductors at five different rehearsal venues, over 100 concerts and 10 National Final appearances, whilst also conducting LGB Brass with great success.
Fortunate
Speaking about his decision he said: "I've been fortunate to have played first trombone for nine years until the test pieces became just a bit too taxing for me, and have since been able to play second under many fine players. The overriding factor at Friary though has been the people involved."
Although diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer six years ago, he stated that, "thanks to some great care and treatment from the medics I'm still here", as well as from "the support of banding friends and in particular, everyone at Friary who have helped me to keep going and keep playing."
He added: "Thank you Friary for the experience of a lifetime. I wish everyone all the very best for the future and I will be cheering you on."
Stalwart
In giving his thanks, Band Chairperson David Wicks commented: "Ian has been a real stalwart of Friary, a true bandsman in every sense. He's been through some tough times recently but has always maintained a positive outlook and continued playing whenever possible.
We shall miss him and wish him and his wife Jane — also a staunch Friary supporter — well for the future."
