The 2026 International Brass Band Summer School recently came to an end with a Gala Concert in Swansea showcasing the communal progress of its 100 and more delegates from across the globe.

Direction

The course marked the first under the direction of Colonel David Barringer, who oversaw an intensive programme of rehearsals, sectional coaching, masterclasses and performances delivered by internationally respected tutors, conductors and performers.

Throughout the week, delegates of all ages and abilities developed their technique, musical confidence and ensemble skills under the likes of Tom Hutchinson, Richard Marshall, Owen Farr, Brett Baker, Gary Curtin, Matt Routley and Mark Thackrah.

Behind the scenes, tutors and volunteer organisers worked tirelessly to create an environment where high musical standards were matched by encouragement, friendship and an infectious enthusiasm — the ethos that has long underpinned the ethos of the course.

Conductor Course

An integral Conductors Course led by Frank Renton provided aspiring conductors with invaluable experience in rehearsal technique, score study and musical leadership.

The Gala Concert provided a fitting culmination to the week with performances from its Cardinal and Heritage ensembles, and which included musical tributes to composer Philip Sparke to mark his 75th birthday.

In addition, there was music from Bramwell Tovey, Esme Harper, Ashley Marsden amongst others which led to the thrilling massed band finale of the famous 'Toccata' from Boellmann's 'Suite Gothique'.

Col Barringer was joined by guest conductors Prof Nicholas Childs and Dr Tom Davoren who had made the journey from the USA, whilst guest soloists, Tom Hutchinson, Brett Baker and the young Italian euphonium player Daniel Lavachelli were on sparkling form.

Standing ovation

Reflecting on the success of the course Col Barringer told 4BR: "The standing ovation that greeted the final performance reflected not only the quality of the music heard on stage, but also the extraordinary progress made by delegates throughout the week.

Next year

He added: "Many told me that they left Swansea with far more than improved musicianship. They departed inspired by new ideas, enriched by lasting friendships and already looking forward to the next International Brass Band Summer School."
