Brass band composer Jacob Vilhelm Larsen has enjoyed a winning world premiere performance of his latest work at the Danish Marching Band Championships in Skive in Central Jutland.

It was provided by Greve Pigegarde, an all-female band of players aged between 8 and 22 who won the brass band section at the Championships with a performance that included his 'The Wizard of Menlo Park', inspired by the life and work of American inventor Thomas Edison.

In his lifetime Edison registered over 1,000 patents on inventions many developed at his industrial laboratory complex at Menlo Park in New Jersey.

Challenge

Jacob told 4BR: "The four-movement work provided the band with a substantial musical and technical challenge, which they delivered with such confidence. They really captured the rhythmic writing, lyrical sections and colourful textures designed to showcase their abilities and to bring the music to life."

Three disciplines

The Danish Marching Band Championships saw Greve Pigegarde compete in the brass band concert, street march and tattoo disciplines.

First place in the brass band concert category was added to fourth place in the other disciplines with the band coming fourth overall.
