Young Conductor Pathway launched by St Helens Youth Band

A new initiative has been launched to help develop the next generation of young brass band conductors in the North West.

St Helens
The initiative aims to inspire the next generation of young conductors in the area

The St Helens Youth Band has announced the launch of its 'Young Conductors Pathway', which will run from October through to the Summer of 2027.

Funded by Sound! Music Hub, the year-long initiative will provide aspiring conductors aged 13 to 21 with expert tuition, mentoring and podium experience.

It's been designed for young people wishing to explore ensemble experience, who are curious about conducting and have had limited opportunities to develop these skills.

Successful applicants will learn conducting technique through specialist workshops, gain regular podium experience, observe professional conductors in action, and progress towards conducting both informal performances and major concerts.

Inclusive

4BR was informed that participants will learn alongside one another, reflect on their development, and receive feedback from both mentors and peers. The experience will include visits to rehearsals and performances by other ensembles, providing valuable insight into a range of conducting styles and musical settings.

Jay Hall, MD of St Helens Youth Brass Band, told 4BR: "Conductors play a vital role in bringing music to life, yet opportunities for young people to learn, explore and practise conducting can be difficult to find.

We are excited to create more opportunities for young musicians to discover their potential, express themselves through music and experience the joy of bringing an ensemble together."

Special project

Mel Burton, Strategic Lead Officer for Sound! Music Hub added: "This project is particularly special to us because it was selected for funding directly by the Sound! Youth Board, with members choosing to invest part of their own budget in an initiative they felt would make a lasting difference for young people.

Their decision reflects the importance of ensuring young voices help shape the opportunities available across our music education network."
