Marsden Silver Prize Band has told 4BR of its pride in being part of a special Remembrance Day project to honour those from their village who gave their lives in conflict.
Flood damage
In 1920, the local Marsden Senior School purchased a marching bass drum from Hawkes & Son, which was proudly kept by the band. Unfortunately, it was damaged in a flood that engulfed the bandroom earlier this year.
However, thanks to the help and support of many different people and groups such as Mike Heaven, The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Royal British Legion Marsden Branch, archivists Robin and Jess Jenkins, St Bartholomew's Church Marsden, Simply Signs Diggle and Drum One, the treasured instrument has been restored.
Names added
In addition, the names of those who lost their lives have been displayed on the drum skin so that there is both a visual and aural reminder of their ultimate sacrifice.
A spokesperson told 4BR: "The restored drum will be on display at St Bartholomew's Church, Marsden, from 1st to 14th November. In addition, the band has specially decorated a number of marching drums which will feature during the Remembrance Sunday parade and service in the village.
This project is a fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring that the names and memories of Marsden's fallen continue to be remembered by generations to come."
