Report & Result: 2018 Ripon Cathedral Entertainment

The Leyburn Band claims the entertainment glory at Ripon Cathedral

Ripon
The Leyburn Band claimed the Championship Rose Bowl

The Leyburn Band regained the Ripon Cathedral Entertainment title on the weekend — despite almost losing their grasp on the Rose Bowl trophy by going over time.

Although they lost two points by exceeding the 20 minute limit, their polished set, which opened with the choreographed and vocalised 'Saints Fantasy' and closed with the rousing 'American Trilogy', still saw them pip rivals Uppermill to claim the £250 first prize. Trimdon Concert Band was third.

Contrast

After coming runner-up last year it was the latest fine result for the un-registered band conducted by Rebecca Lundberg, as they showed contrast in their programme with 'When the Stars Begin to Fall', (which won an additional £50 as the 'Best Hymn'), 'Goldcrest' and the cornet solo 'Solitaire' played by Emma Lundberg. They also claimed the 'Best Percussion' accolade.

"We're thrilled by the result,"Band spokesperson Jules Higham told 4BR. "We are a busy band that is growing and enjoying our music making. Rebecca has inspired us and we're delighted to have claimed the title for the second time (they won in 2014).

Now we have a busy couple of months ahead and we'll be showing off the trophy at the Leyburn Food & Drink Festival this weekend."

Excellent day

On what was an excellent day of competitive music making run by the organisers Uppermill certainly pushed the eventual winner all the way by winning the George Percival Memorial Trophy by providing the 'Most Entertaining' programme as well as the 'Best March' and 'Best Soloist' thanks to cornet player Sarah Hudson.

Skipton's Bob Nevin won the 'Best Euphonium' trophy, whilst Thurlstone took the 'Best Fourth Section' award with Shepherd Group Youth taking the 'Best Youth Section' trophy.
