Childs helps Vorsprung Durch Technik for German conductors

The German brass band movement continues to grow in number and quality — with Dr Robert Childs leading an intensive three day Conductors Council masterclass in Dinkelscherben near Augsburg.

Dr Robert Childs has just returned from a trip to Germany where he led a three-day conducting masterclass workshop organised by the German Brass Band Association (DBBV).

The 'Conductors Council' initiative was part of the Association's annual general meeting in Dinkelscherben near Augsburg, with Vice-President, Alexander Richter telling 4BR that it proved to be a great success.

Thrilled

"We were thrilled that Dr Childs visited us. Over three intensive days he worked tirelessly with a number of conductors on various practical and theoretical aspects of conducting in general and the direction of a brass band in particular."

He added: "With the participation of the Brass Band Woodshockers Band he was able to show practical examples of what he discussed — from rehearsal planning to concert compilation, score development and rehearsal technique. The expert individual coaching gave each participant the opportunity for personal development as a conductor."

Support and insight

The three days ended with concert performance, with Alexander concluding: "Everyone was very pleased that we were able to launch this format with the support of Besson.

The experience gained for all participants was more than extraordinary. Dr. Childs gave us all invaluable insight into the conducting skills required."

Future progress

At the AGM of the German Brass Band Association, members also received a lasting memory of the 2018 National Championship in the form of a professionally produced DVD.

Further work was also undertaken in preparing for an Open Brass Band Entertainment Contest in Osnabrück in 2019, as well as announcements concerning a National Youth Brass Band, a second 'Conductors Council' and details surrounding the the next German Championship 2020 in Bad Kissingen.

DBBV President, Arnd Bolten told 4BR: "We are pleased to be able to further consolidate the structures of the brass band movement in Germany.

Numbers continue to grow, and with further events and initiatives, things are developing with sustainable quality."
