More about Ralph

Mr. Ralph Hotz brings a wealth of knowledge to the brass band world. Trained as a french horn player at the Juilliard School of Music, he was a professional musician for 31 years. Since his retirement from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1992, he has devoted his time and energy to brass banding. His musical background includes playing in the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band for the Monterey Jazz Festival, to 28 years as a horn player with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Also included in his resume is a one year appointment as Associate Principal Horn with the National Symphony in Washington D.C. While with the National Symphony, Mr. Hotz was asked to spend the summer of 1964 with the New York Philharmonic.

He brings to the brass band world a unique eclectic taste and knowledge of music. This musical taste has been acquired as a result of his wide-ranging musical tastes and interests. In addition to his classical training and professional experience, his experiences range from recording with rock and roll bands in the late 60’s and 70’s in San Francisco, to being Tenor Horn soloist with the Pacific Brass, Salt River Brass, Las Vegas Brass Band, and Saint Louis Brass Band. By performing as a tenor horn soloist with the Santa Rosa Little Symphony he is working to create a bridge between traditional classical music and the brass band world. He has been the solo horn of the Salt River Brass in Phoenix and solo horn with the Utah Premiere Brass. He is an honorary member of the Brass Band of Central Florida and has appeared with this top United States band on many occasions. Mr. Hotz now resides in Colorado and is the new solo tenor horn player for the Rocky Mountain Brassworks.

Hotz was one of the founding members of Renaissance Brass of Sun City Arizona and the Utah Premiere Brass. Hotz has been a brass band specialist for the past 8 years, spending much of his time studying and practicing the special art of brass banding. He conscientiously attempts to keep up with all the new music for brass band and has a love of the “Entertainment Concert.” Mr. Hotz can bring this knowledge and enthusiasm to your band and can pass on many of the “tricks of the trade” during a band training, clinic engagement or soloist engagement.
