World Rankings: October update

Black Dyke’s victory in London closes the gap at the top of the rankings.

Black Dyke

Cory remains at the top of the World of Brass — British Bandsman Rankings following the National Championship Final at the Royal Albert Hall a fortnight ago, but Black Dyke’s first victory at the event in five years leaves the Yorkshire band poised to launch a challenge for the number one spot during the next 12 months.

It won’t be this year, however, and with only the Brass in Concert Championship remaining in 2014 for the leading bands, Cory is certain to finish on top of the rankings for a remarkable eighth year in succession. Brighouse and Rastrick and Fairey also move up a few places following their successful trips to London.

Among the biggest movers recently are Wantage Silver ‘A’, which enjoyed it’s best result in its history in the Capital, while Friary Guildford’s recent good contesting form leaves London and Southern Counties’ three leading band locked together just outside the top 50.

The other contests taking place since the last update were:

SCABA Autumn Contest — won by Friary Guildford;
Fife Charities — won by Bo'ness and Carriden;
West Wales BBA — won by Burry Port;
Bolsover Festival of Brass — won by Derwent Brass.

The next update will follow the Brass in Concert Championship, by which time number of national events will have taken place on the Continent and in the USA, so look out for some significant movers from outside the UK.
