GlasgowThe keenly fought Scottish Youth Championships are held on the same day in Glasgow where all the very best young players are on display in three sections for the judges David Childs and Alistair Orr.

The Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships will also be taking place at the same time as the Scottish Open contests, and that is sure to provide a vibrant atmosphere in and around the hall.

The Scots have an amazing conveyor belt of talent in full production at present as can be heard by the playing of the National Youth Band of Scotland on their recent courses.

This year the competitors will have to try and catch the ear of David Childs and Alastair Orr, both of whom in their own ways know exactly what it takes to produce a fine performance.  It is especially nice to see David Childs involved in an adjudicating capacity, as he really is a role model for all young players.

Only the one band though in the Community Section, where Queensferry High School under Gareth Ross will perform their 20 minute programme hoping to repeat the Gold Award standard they reached last year.

Meanwhile there is a very healthy turn out of 6 bands in the Development Section which promises to be a real delight with some cracking bands and some equally cracking young players on display.

Finally, the Premier Section where the standard over the last couple of years has been quite outstanding. The three bands from last year return once more with West Lothian Schools keen to once more retain their title and gain yet another Gold Award for their efforts. Led by Nigel Boddice, they are simply one of the very best youth ensembles in the whole of the country.

Close behind them though will be Aberdeen City Youth, who were also top notch last year under the direction of  Eric Kidd, and Moray Concert Brass under Glenn Munroe who took a Silver Award last year but who have been improving in leaps and bounds in the past twelve months.

Watch out though for some exciting young talent being featured, with the likes of Whitburn's brilliant young euphonium player Richard Kidd sure to feature again as well as the talented Paula Leslie of the Bon Accord Band.

All three events should be a real treat.
