2010 Yorkshire Regional Championship - Third Section: Runners & Riders

1-Mar-2010

12 bands will look for a bit of love interest amid the hard labour in Percy Fletchers testing old work.

St Georges HallSunday 7th March
Adjudicators: Lynda Nicholson & Alan Morrison
Test Piece: Labour & Love (Percy Fletcher)
Commences: 9.30am
Draw: 8.00am

There is definitely a hard challenge awaiting the Third Section bands on Sunday morning, where Percy Fletcher’s ‘Labour & Love’ could see plenty of blood, sweat and the occasional tear in search of the emotion of victory.

The standard of playing in the Third Section here hasn’t been great over the last few years (you have to go back to 2001 for a podium finish at the Finals, and last year’s qualifiers came 7th and 15th) and this is a hard ask in anyone’s book.

Up and coming

There are some up and coming bands here though, so Lynda Nicholson and Alan Morrison could be in for a surprise or two, but whoever gets through will have deserved it on this old pot boiler.

It’s always difficult to pin point the bands who could well walk away from St George’s Hall with a qualification place to their name at this level, but one or two of these contenders do stand out from the crowd this year.

Crofton Silver is really a band on the up under the direction of Tim Sidwell and will be looking to claim the title this weekend after narrowly missing out last year. They posted a well-deserved 7th place at Harrogate, and if they have built on that then a return trip should be theirs once again.

Boosted

Elland meanwhile will be boosted not only by the great James Shepherd at the helm but also by the fact that they will have a host of those talented youngsters who brilliantly took the Action Research title in their ranks.

Lofthouse 2000 found their feet last year after their promotion from the Fourth Section, but know they will have to up their form from their appearance at Brass at the Guild Hall, whilst Gawthorpe Brass has been a consistent challenger in the last few years under the baton of Stephen Bradnum and will be looking to book their first finals appearance since 2005.

Armthorpe Elmfield will once again be directed by Haydn Griffiths as they look to gain a foothold at this level following promotion from the Fourth Section, whilst Chapletown will want to ensure that they don’t get drawn into any potential relegation fight after coming 10th last year.

Consistent

Clifton & Lightcliffe found life a bit too testing in the Second Section but John Clay’s young band should be a competitive outfit here this weekend once again, whilst Gawthorpe Brass 85 is another band that has shown remarkable consistency here over the past few years and who will looking to book a place back at Harrogate for the first time since 1997.

Last year’s Fourth Section winners Maltby Miners will also be a band looking to taste the rarefied Harrogate air once again after putting in a promising performance last year, and they started this season off with a decent enough showing at Butlins.

Skelmanthorpe B meanwhile is a band growing in confidence under Phil Garlick and will be looking to maintain their ever-improving year on year record on the weekend.

West Yorkshire Police has held its own here in the past two seasons and will be hoping for a possible top six finish whilst Wetherby & District delivered a solid 5th place last year. They too will be looking towards the podium places this time around.

As for a winner?

The two for Harrogate for us are Crofton Silver and Elland Silver, both of whom have shown real improvement over the last year, whilst they should be hard pushed all the way there by the likes of Lofthouse 2000, Gawthorpe, Clifton and Chapeltown.

Our dark horse is Maltby Miners.

4BR Prediction:

1. Crofton Silver
2. Elland Silver
3. Lofthouse 2000
4. Gawthorpe
5. Clifton & Lightcliffe
6. Chapeltown
