Composer's Forum at RNCM

There will be a public forum debate on the creative state of the brass band movement at the RNCM Festival this weekend.

4BR’s Chris Thomas is to chair a public forum on the creative state of the brass band movement at the RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester on Saturday.

6.30pm start

Taking place at 6.30pm, shortly before Foden's evening concert, Chris will be joined a panel of leading composers comprising Gavin Higgins, Paul McGhee, Lucy Pankhurst, Andy Scott, Peter Meechan and Dan Price.

The open discussion will centre on how attitudes to new music have changed during recent years, the way forward for new repertoire and how the banding movement can develop creative talent whilst looking to encourage composers from outside to take an interest in writing for the medium.

Chris commented: "New music is always a topical talking point, but perhaps never more so than now. We shall be discussing some of the issues that affect young composers in particular, and whether there is anything we can learn from our fellow brass banding nations to encourage a greater spirit of musical openness and adventure."
