4BR has been informed of the death of Harold Lang, who was a member of the great CWS (Manchester) Band from 1948 to the mid 1970s.

He was aged 88, and passed away peacefully in hospital in Manchester on Friday 21st September.

Work and play

Harold joined the CWS (Manchester) Band in January 1948 from playing in Exeter and both played for the band and worked for the company until the mid 1970s.

He played the baritone when he first joined, but as Derek Garside told radio presenter Chris Helme, "...we made him into a bass player, and he played the Eb bass with distinction."

Titles

Harold was a member of the band that won the British Open on four occasions, the title of Champions Band of Great Britain twice and the North West Area Championship 11 times.

The funeral took place on Tuesday 2nd October at Manchester Crematorium.
