Hungarian rhapsody for Mead

Steven Mead is set to gain a new concerto from the pen of the celebrated Hungarian composer Roland Szentpali.

Steven Mead

The internationally renowned composer and tuba virtuoso Roland Szentpali is set to write a new ‘Euphonium Concerto’ for Steven Mead.

Premieres

The work is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2013 and arrangements are already beginning to be made for premieres in different countries.

Hungarian born Szentpali was a student at the Béla Bartok Academy in Budapest from 1991 to 1995, and continued his studies with Lászlò Szabò at the F. Liszt Academy.

His accuracy on every little detail in music and knowing his limitless abilities on euphonium, makes me feel like a kid in the toy store!Composer, Roland Szentpali

Friendship

Roland and Steve have been friends for many years, performing together at numerous brass festivals around the world, and there had been talk of a major work emerging from their musical association for some years.

Dream

Steve told 4BR: "It’s been a dream of mine to have a new concerto from Roland and now I’ve been able to commission it from him I’m delighted."

Roland is equally enthusiastic too as he revealed: "It's a huge honour to compose a concerto for Steven. His accuracy on every little detail in music and knowing his limitless abilities on euphonium, makes me feel like a kid in the toy store!"
