Report & Results: 2016 Morley March & Hymn Tune

Here comes the sun — and cash — as Hepworth fill their marching and hymn tune boots at Morley.

Hepworth

The lucrative march and hymn tune contest season kicked off on the weekend of British Summer time with Hepworth continuing their excellent run of 2016 form by leading the way at the popular Morley contest.

Hepworth victory

They took the overall first prize and Crispin Shield trophy with a clear-cut victory over 19 rivals from the north of England, Yorkshire, north-west and the Midlands — picking up the awards for 'Best Contest March', 'Best Hymn Tune', 'Best Foot March' and 'Best Deportment' in securing a prize package worth a hefty £860.

Under the baton of Mark Peacock, the band performed the classic Rimmer march 'Ravenswood'.

Yorkshire Imperial DUT claimed a well deserved second place and £330, with Wingates in third (£180).

Hammonds Saltaire's Philip Varley took the 'Best Instrumentalist' award, whilst section awards went to Skelmanthorpe, Flixton, Ferryhill and Elmfield and the youth award picked up by Shirland Welfare Training, who headed home with £190 to their name as well as plenty of silverware.
