Brett Baker, has recently returned home from one of the world's leading international trombone and low brass festivals in Sante Fe, Argentina.

The University of Salford Programme Leader was involved in conducting the premier trombone choir and a number of small ensembles, leading workshops on classical solo repertoire and giving a recital of commissions, as well as showcasing the first performance in South America of Gordon Langford's 'Rhapsody for Trombone' with wind band accompaniment.

Organised by a team led by Ruben Carughi and Heini Schneebeli, Brett joined a list of renowned soloists and educators such as Massimo Peroni from Italy, Vanessa Fralick from Canada and the American quintet of Mark Kellogg, Paul Compton, Adam Frey, Catie Hickey and Jonathan Warburton. The featured composer was John Frith from the UK.

Premieres

Delegates made the trip to Argentina from all around the world, with players representing Peru, Columbia, Brazil, Venezula, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, Russia and Germany enjoying lessons, workshops, concerts and recitals.

There were no less than 13 world premieres including a rhapsody by pianist and composer Michael Schneider premiered by Paul Compton. Commissions featured trombone, euphonium tuba and brass ensembles.

Highlight

Brett told 4BR: "It was such an exhilarating week of music making — from the recitals by world class artists that simply blew the delegates away to the new music and the personal highlight of being able to perform the Langford 'Rhapsody'.

I recommend anyone that has the chance to attend to book their flights for 2018 now. It was inspirational."
