56th and final time for Dirk

Hatfield Band's BBb tuba player Derek Dawson will be taking a final Area bow in Huddersfield — 56 years after he made his debut...

The Area contest will mark the last performance of a player who has given outstanding service to banding

The Hatfield Band has announced that their vastly experienced BBb tuba player Derek Dawson is to retire from banding following his appearance with them at the forthcoming Yorkshire Regional Championships in Huddersfield.

Now aged 81, the contest will mark exactly 56 years since 'Dirk', as he is universally known, first took to the stage with Grimethorpe Colliery Band in 1962. It will also by an incredible 70 years since he first joined Ryhill Band alongside his uncle.

Wonderful career

It is sure to be an emotional end to a wonderful playing career — one marked by outstanding dedication and commitment to the many bands he has played for and helped out over the decades.

And as a special mark of respect the band will be holding an open rehearsal at Askern Miners Welfare Club on Friday 2nd March (8.30pm), where friends and acquaintances are invited to come along to see Dirk in action.

Of course, the intent is also for his many mates to join with Derek in the bar after the rehearsal to reminisce and drink to his good health!4BR
