30 year tenure comes to an end at St. Kilda

One of the longest musical partnerships in New Zealand banding has come to an end.

St Kilda
The band is one of the most famous in New Zealand

4BR has been informed that the successful 30 year contesting association between conductor Peter Adams and New Zealand's St Kilda Brass has come to an end with the announcement of his retirement from the contest stage.

National Champion

As Associate Professor of Music at the University of Otago, Peter has provided strong links between the band and Dunedin's educational and musical communities.

One of the many high points of his Musical Directorship was leading 'The Saints' as they are known, to become National Champions in 1992. The band was formed in 1901 and has held its A Grade status since 1908.

Appointment

The band has appointed Shane Foster as their new Musical Director.

The UK born musician played soprano cornet at various Championship bands in the Yorkshire and Lancashire emigrating to New Zealand in 2006. Since then he has gained extensive playing, adjudicating and conducting experience, including most recently as MD of Alpine Energy Timaru Brass.

A celebration of Peter's contribution, and a formal welcome to Shane were made at the band's recent 'Friends & Family' end-of-year concert. During the event awards were also made to 'Player' and 'Bandsman of the Year' Ian McCabe and Peter McHenry respectively.

The 'Soloist Award' went to Harry Smith, recently appointed as principal euphonium of the 2020 National Youth Band of New Zealand.
