Regent Brass, the London & Southern Counties based First Section ensemble that has gained wide acclaim for its innovative programming, will once again showcase new and rarely heard compositions for the medium at a concert in Islington on Sunday 22nd June.
Brass Collages
'Brass Collages' will feature a series of original works offering different perspectives on the concept of musical variation.
These include two solo compositions — with James Chan's 'At the Gates' with cellist Lucy Neill, and a world premiere of 'Fairy in the Nonagon', written by their Young Composer in Residence, Franklin Onyeso, featuring tubist Nona Lawrence.
Also included will be Elgar Howarh's youthful work 'Mosaic' as well as Thea Musgrave's 'Variations', written for the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland in 1966 and which in its theme and five variations explores different sounds and textures.
Old and new
The 50th anniversary of the death of Sir Arthur Bliss will be marked by a performance of his 'Belmont Variations', named after the birthplace of his wife in Massachusetts.
There will also be works by Philip Venables ('Dutch Courage') and Gavin Bryers ('After the Underworld') as well as a rare hearing of 'Chi' by Gary Carpenter which was written for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain in 1993.
