Paul Hindmarsh, the acclaimed arranger and producer, and former Artistic Director of the RNCM Brass Band Festival, has written a passionate promotion of the importance of brass bands as a vital conduit of talent to the classical music world.
It's been published on the influential website and magazine publication 'Classical Music', which since 1976 has been a pioneering voice in serving the sector.
Paul outlines his case in an article entitled: "The importance of Britain's brass bands"- highlighting not only the incredible supply of playing talent that continues to fill the brass sections of nearly all leading UK orchestras, but also its foundation stones such as the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
Composers and conductors
He also highlights the composers and conductors who have crossed successfully into the classical world, such as Gavin Higgins, Bramwell Tovey and Elgar Howarth, as well as shining a light on one, in Wilfred Heaton whose wider work is now being re-evaluated and appreciated.
One of those who has helped in that is composer and former RNCM Principal, Edward Gregosn, who says in the article: "Heaton had the skill set and originality, but not the opportunity to realise his full potential away from brass bands."
