The brass world has been saddened to hear of the passing of Ted Griffiths, who for nearly four decades was an integral administrative figure with Hammonds Band. He passed away following a short illness on December 17th.
Greatest respect
Held in the greatest respect by banding friends and rivals alike, he enjoyed a remarkable banding career — including leading the Yorkshire Bus Company Band to a Senior Cup triumph in 1980 and the Third Section National title the following year.
He also led Meltham & Meltham Mills to the Yorkshire Second Section title in 1991 and Dobcross Youth Band to numerous successes, including the Junior Section title of the National Youth Championships in 1997 and North West Area title in 2001.
Hammonds tribute
On receiving the news, the Hammonds Band stated: "Last night was a very emotional rehearsal for the band as we paid tribute to Ted Griffiths who sadly passed away this week.
Ted was such a large part of the band for an incredible 38 years where he has been the band librarian, representative and no 1 supporter attending every rehearsal and being a constant presence in the bandroom welcoming players old and new.
The rehearsal commenced with a very heartfelt tribute from Mike Walsh and we played one of Ted's favourite hymns 'Lavinia' by Handel Parker. Thank you from everyone Ted you will be sadly missed."
