The death has been announced of the respected composer, conductor, tuba artist and Bandmaster of the Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers, Simon Kerwin.

He passed away peacefully on Wednesday 7th November, aged 57, following lengthy treatment for cancer.

4BR was informed that having been diagnosed with cancer in July 2018, Simon underwent 48 rounds of chemotherapy in 12 weeks which successfully reduced all his tumours.

However, with a highly weakened immune system due to treatment and contracting several infections, including sepsis, which he also beat, the damage to his lungs was too extensive. After nearly three weeks in intensive care at St. James's Hospital, Leeds, two of which were in a medically induce coma, he died peacefully in his wife's arms on Wednesday night.

Musical legacy

His wife Tabby said: "The musical legacy that Simon leaves is immense with over 500 pieces of music published, a catalogue of impressive performances around the world and a successful events business, Mode for… Events, which we developed together over the last 10 years.

He also built and developed one of the most highly regarded bands in the British Military, one which is a huge testament to his qualities as a leader, manager and director.

Mostly though, he will be missed for his character, charm, passion and love and a very unique sense of humour and kindness towards everyone that met him. He was truly one of life's most treasured people."

Strong character

She added: "I am heartbroken and sad beyond belief and a part of me went with Simon on Wednesday night, but I know there is more of him left with me and he has given me and all our children the strength and skills to get through this most devastating of times.

Simon has always been a very strong character and I am so glad he had the fight to beat the cancer and got to know about that success, despite being in intensive care. He gave his final performance everything, but sadly, this week it was time to make it his swan song.

His spirit, character and music will live on forever though and we will celebrate him and smile because of him every day."

Further details will be released in the next few weeks.
