‘A wonderful evening of music’ was one of the comments given by the Deputy Mayor of Calderdale after the annual concert by the Clifton & Lightcliffe Band, who performed to an almost capacity audience in the Central Methodist Church, Brighouse.

Special guest

As well as the organisation’s Senior, Junior and Learners bands taking part, this year’s special guest was euphonium legend Lyndon Baglin who performed four solos with the Senior Band.

The theme of the concert was ‘Memories’ and was fronted by compere Brian Nicholson, who was also celebrating his Golden Wedding which took place at the very church where the concert was held.

Wide selection

The Senior Band played a wide selection of popular tunes including ‘Barber of Seville’, ‘Disney Fantasy’,’ La Vie En Rose’ and the march by Eric Ball. ‘Star Lake’, which was conducted by Rex Clamp who had travelled from Canada to be at the concert.

Lyndon Baglin performed ‘Those Endearing Young Charms’ and ‘Grandfathers Clock’, both of which took all the bands concentration to keep pace with him.

He then slowed the tempo to play ‘The Sunshine of your Smile’ and ‘Jeanne with the Light Brown Hair’, and was joined by Graham Cass, Anne Schofield and Brian Nicholson for a beautiful rendition of ‘Myfanwy’ for four euphoniums and band arranged by Musical Director John Clay.

Warm appreciation

The Junior Band was conducted on the evening by the bands assistant musical director David Crisp and featured a trombone duet with 16 year old Rebecca Long and 10 year old Charlotte Horsfield as well as three other pieces. 

The Learner Band with 16 members aged between 8 and 10 years played two items which were very warmly received.
