Tameside Council puts brass bands at core of award winning approach

Commitment to inspiring young brass band players sees Tameside Council Cultural Services gain Trinity College London award.

Tameside Council Cultural Services has been awarded the status of ‘Good Practice Centre for Arts’ by Trinity College, London.

Award

The prestigious award, supported by Arts Council England, is a national qualification in recognition of the council’s cultural arts programme — one that has brass band players very much at its core in providing an arts learning pathway for children and young people.

Tameside joins the likes of The Lowry Centre, Bath Festivals and Harrow Arts Centre is gaining the 2014-15 award, which Trinity College states, ‘inspires others’.

Deliver and support

Arts & Engagement Manager Vanessa Rothwell told 4BR: “The Cultural Services team deliver and support the programmes in schools, colleges and community settings throughout Tameside by providing bespoke learning logs for Tameside participants with support from Curious Minds — the Bridging Organisation for Arts Council England in the North West.”

90% uptake

The uptake of the programme since June 2013 has been unprecedented, with over 90% of Tameside’s schools taking up the offer to be a part.

The service have also worked with a number of high profile organisations to create national ‘logs’ including, The National Theatre for the national production of ‘War Horse’, the BBC for the ‘Ten Pieces’ classical music project and the Halle Orchestra for ‘Rumble In the Jungle’.

Brass band settings

The most recent ‘log’ initiative has seen the scheme support children and young people in brass band settings, and has already proven to be a huge success.

The proactive approach for youngster to ‘Discover’, ‘Find Out’ and ‘Share’ their experiences through their log book, of brass bands and being part of brass banding – from the music making to designing a CD cover or explaining about the emotions brass band music creates.

It’s fun and inventive approach rewards those who take part with awards up to Gold level.

Cambrian Brass
