Knapton leaves Ireland after twelve year stint

The 12 year tenure of Ian Knapton as MD at Ireland Colliery (Chesterfield) has come to an end.

4BR has been informed that due to personal reasons Ian Knapton is to step down from his role as Musical Director of Ireland Colliery (Chesterfield) Band after 12 years at the helm.

National Finals

During this time he first put in place the solid foundations that eventually led to the band rising from the Fourth to the First Section in the space of five years — including four successive National Finals appearances and a brace of Bolsover Festival wins.

Difficult time

Commenting on his departure Ian told 4BR: "This is a very difficult time for me and my family after some decisions I have had to make.

I'm very proud of what I have achieved with some great people and players and wish the organisation all the very best.

I believe I've left the band in a better state than when I took over 12 years ago thanks to the hard work and dedication of the players who have worked alongside me."

Enjoyed

He added: "I would also like to thank everyone connected with the band who over the years have helped with creating the achievements we enjoyed together."

4BR was informed that Ian is now taking a break from banding and has also resigned from his role as bass trombone with Unite the Union Band.
