Memorable day for Shipston youngsters

It proved to be a memorable contest day for some talented youngsters from Shipston Band at the recent Oxford & District Brass Band Association contest.

Last weekend a number of players from Shipston Town made their annual visit to the annual Solo, Duet Quartet & Ensemble contest held at Marlborough School in Woodstock organised by the Oxford & District Brass Band Association.

Special day

Whilst the band enjoyed a very successful day, it was a very special one for two of their youngest performers — 8 year old cornet players Alec Banner and Talullah Matthews.

Alec won the '8 Years & Under' slow melody event, playing the 'Skye Boat Song', closely followed by 7 year old Peter Coates also from Shipston. Alec then joined with Talullah to win the 'Under 11 Duet' beating a number of much more experienced players with their performance of 'Blowing in the Wind'.

The day was rounded off with a surprise for Alec when he received his trophy — with his moment of glory 'photo bombed' by adjudicators Tom Davoren and Ben Stratford to make it a truly memorable victory4BR
