Alex Crisp
Band 1:
Thurcroft (Ken Vernon)
Intro: Good start. slight tuning problems in 42. Good triplets in power. Well done for dynamics
Scherzo: Good dynamic contrast, p and f are well performed. Great sound in basses and euph bar 221
Tansformation: Good sop and horn. Cornet slightly flat in bar 306. Great sound by euph, shame about clicked note. Cornet flat in bar 321.
Meditation: Good dynamic contrasts. Tuning is good. Good crescendo in bar 337. Flugel sharp in bar 353. Good cornet and euph bar 354.
Apotheosis: Timp early bar 360. Good soloists between 360 and 430. Bit quiet for ff at 475
Maestoso: Good triplets for bars 520 to 544. Good troms and euph bar 558.
Vivace: Quavers well together. Good ff at end.
Overall performance: Well done for dynamics, rhythms and tuning. Great start to the section
Band 2:
Huddersfield & Ripponden (Tony Jaeger-Fozard)
Intro: Good f to start. Quavers at 18 slightly across. Great piano in tune at 47
Scherzo: Good quavers at 108. keep driving forward because the tempo slows a bit. Good f at 194. Cornet good at 210, maybe slightly flat. Seems not together at 249
Transformation: Good sop and horn at 304. Sop slightly flat. Cornet good. Euph well played but maybe a bit more dim at 316
Meditation: Good mp. Slightly out of tune at 337 due to cresc. Cornet flat at 339. Shame with top notes at 349, euph out of tune.
Apotheosis: Good starting tempo. Clarity is good. Well played horns at 386. Nice rhythms at 414 onwards. Good f. Powerful troms at 513
Maestoso: Good triplets at 520 onwards. Shock quavers good at 536
Vivace: Quavers slightly across at 570. Good for going for top C at 570, the split doesn’t matter.
Overall performance: Well done, some tuning problems but otherwise a great performance
Band 3:
Deepcarr (Gavin Somerset)
Intro: Good tempo but maybe too fast for clarity. Cornet note out of tune bar 22. Triplets need more bounce bar 90 onwards
Scherzo: Quavers across at bar 268. Good f at 194. Cornet flat at 210. Quavers not together at 219 onwards. Flugel and horn good at bar 283. 296 tuning is off
Transformation: Good cornet 311 and euph at 317. Euph slightly flat. Tuning off at 326
Meditation: Slightly out of tune at 328. Great cresc and subito p at 337. Good top Cs at 348. Good flugel and bari at 353. Watching
Apotheosis: Good tempo. Well done on tune between 314 and 430. Good troms at 459, maybe slightly out of tune
Maestoso: Good triplets at 520. Side drum slightly rushes, watch it
Vivace: Well done for playing a slower tempo to increase clarity. Thanks for going for top notes at 580, splits dont matter
Overall performance: Good performance, maybe slightly flawed by tuning and technical bits. You show potential with such young players
Band 4:
Oughtibridge (Alan Coe)
Intro: Technical quavers slightly not together. Sop out of tune at 31. Good horns for tune before and after 69. Good triplets 90 onwards
Scherzo: Quaver good after 145. Good tune at 160, play slightly louder because the rest of the band is playing too loud. Maybe slightly quiet at 267
Transformation: Sop push air forward to get best sound at 304. Good soloists. Cornet slightly flat at 324
Meditation: Tuning is good and dynamics are just right. Good crescendo at 337. Tuning slightly slips at 340 Good cresc and dim at 347 -350. Cornet flat at 356
Apotheosis: Good troms at 366 and horns at 380. Good cresc and dim at 414 onwards. Well done for dynamics. Out of tune at 446
Maestoso: Drive triplets forward. Good tuning in horns 549 well done for doing it slower to increase clarity
Vivace: Quavers together well. First band to nail top notes at 580. Well done
Overall performance: Good performance. Slower tempos give better clarity. Slight tuning problems but well done
Band 5:
Haworth (Charles Hindmarsh)
Intro: Good start tuning problems in long notes at 22. Good horns after 47. Quavers don’t gel at 81. Good triplets at 90 onwards
Scherzo: Keep driving forward at 145. losing clarity between 178 and 194. Bad tuning at 300
Transformation: Good sop and horns at 304. Cornets need to blow more. Euph slightly flat.
Meditation: Tuning problems at 328 in horns. Good cresc at 337, just watch tuning of long note. Good high notes at 349. Flugel and bari out of tune at 353
Apotheosis: Good tempo, clarity is good. watch tuning on high notes at 414 onwards. Troms out of tune at 446. Good horns before 491
Maestoso: Good triplets. Good tune also at 536. Well done for playing at a slower tempo to increase clarity at 549
Vivace: Good quavers at this tempo. Well done for nailing the top note at 580
Overall performance: Good performance; however, marred by quite a few tuning problems. Faster bits however are good.
Band 6:
Linthwaite (G. Pulleyn)
Intro: Timps need to be louder at the beginning. Sop sharp at 31. Good horns after 47. Good ff after bar 90. Good triplets also
Scherzo: Quavers well together at 108. Slightly across at 143. Keep driving forward at 194. Great cresc and dim 238-240 Quaver across abefore 267. Great cresc at 281.
Transformation: Good cornet maybe slightly flat. Nice horns with great dynamics. Slight tuning problems at 323
Meditation: Good mp. Slightly out of tune on horns. Maybe exaggerate cresc p at 337. Good solos at 340, Try to make more cresc and dim at 347. Tuning goes after 250. Good solos again
Apotheosis: Good percussion . Great shock crochets. Crochet not together at 438. First band to 446 in tune well done.
Maestoso: Shock quavers not together at 523. Triplets at 534 out of tune
Vivace: Quavers not together. Good high notes at 580
Overall performance: Good performance even if slight tuning problems. Great technical parts well done!
Band 7:
Wilsden (Ken Lee)
Intro: Good start however quavers are slightly across. Good horns before and after 69. Triplets at 93 onwards are slightly rushed
Scherzo: Quavers get drowned out at 108 and aren’t together at 145. Good pianos but fortes need more. Good cornet at 210. Great cresc and dim after 233. Good ff at 267. Drum kit across at 293.
Transformation: Cornet and euph flat At 311 great cornet playing. Good musicality (euph) at 315. Cornet and euph not in sync at 324
Meditation: Tuning in horns wavers. Good cresc, piano at 337. 3rd beat in 339 out of tune. Good top note at 348, Well done flugel and bari at 353
Apotheosis: Good f. Great trom playing at 366. Horns slightly out of tune at 382. Keep driving forwards, tempo is slightly dragging at 438.
Maestoso: Good powerful triplets. Side drum in front at 549
Vivace: Side drum rushes but good band quavers. Timp power is welcoming at end
Overall performance: Respectable performance. Just watch technical bits and tuning to improve in the future
Band 8:
Barnsley Metropolitan (Alex Francis)
Intro: Good technical start. Good horns after 59. Good f at 81. Powerful triplets after 90.
Scherzo: Quavers need more power at 108. Good horns again before 178. Timp slightly across at 194. Slight tuning issues at 296
Transformation: Good sop and horn at 305. Well played cornet at 311. Great euph slightly flat at 315. Watch tuning at 325
Meditation: Crochets over bar 332 out of tune. Great crec p at 337 Good vib on note at 348. Baritone flat at 352
Apotheosis: Powerful troms. Watch tuning before 382. God cresc dim at 400. Drive forward to sustain tempo at 475 as it is dragging.
Maestoso: Triplets are too rushed at 520 and 528 Rhythms at 558 across
Vivace: Slower tempo gives more clarity in quavers. Great last note
Overall performance: Good overall performance. Make sure you drive forward at the end. Slight tuning problems with the soloists. Overall- well done.
Band 9:
Worsbrough Brass (John K. Hopkinson)
Intro: Good technical Start. Sop sharp at 31. Horns before 69 out of tune. Good triplets after 90
Scherzo: Try to exaggerate cresc and dim between 110 and 112. Good quavers. Horns too quiet at 162. Good in tune minims at 219. Sop sharp before 244.
Transformation: Good soloists. Tune of 309 – dont dive in. Great cornet at 319 Euph move forward at 323
Meditation: Slight tuning problems in horns. Try to exaggerate the cresc p at 336. On high note sop blows out of tune. Good cornet at euph at 355
Apotheosis: Good tempo. Euph and basses out of tune at 422. Good powerful minims at 446. Great ff at 515
Maestoso: Good driving triplets. Quavers well together.
Vivace: Euph watch not to rush. Last note just needs to be measured
Overall performance: Good performance if let down by a few tuning problems and technical slips
Band 10:
Friendly Band (Sowerby Bridge) (Colin Hardy)
Intro: Great start from the young timp player. Notes at 22 and 31 out of tune. More horn needed after 47. Good triplets at 103
Scherzo: Quavers too quiet are aren’t together in cornets. Good horns at 162, maybe slightly out of tune. Good f at 194. Sop slightly out of tune at 233. Good tune at 267
Transformation: Good sop horn and cornet at 304. Cornet slightly flat at 311 Great euph at 315
Meditation: First note at 328 out of tune. Good cresc p at 337 . Just make sure minim doesn’t go out of tune. Good high note at 349, maybe slightly flat. Flugel flat. Good last chord
Apotheosis: Troms arent clear, good horns at 382, sop sharp at 422. Minim at 446 out of tune. Great crescendo at 475
Maestoso: Good triplets. tempo is good for clarity. Just make sure it doesn’t drag. Good at 558
Vivace: Good together quavers. Last note just needs more
Overall performance: Good performance, tuning not great but overall good.
Band 11:
Dinnington Colliery (Jonathan Beatty)
Intro: Great tempo and start. Trom comes in wrong at 15. Good horns at 47. Powerful triplets
Scherzo: Quavers too quiet. Quavers good at 129. Great horns at 162. Well done dynamics at 194. Cornet at 216 sharp. Good tune at 267. Flugel flat 283. 300 , note is untuneful.
Transformation: Good solos. Cornet slightly flat at 311. Nice musical euph
Meditation: 1st note out of tune. Good cresc p at 337. Notes across bar 338 out of tune. Horns sharp at 346. Cornet early. Good solo.
Apotheosis: Crochets at 366 not toether. Good cresc and dim at 400. Troms powerful at 446 but out of tune.
Maestoso: Good triplets. Drum kit is rushing and across. 549 quavers are not together.
Vivace: Quavers played together well
Overall performance: Great performance even though it deteriorated towards the end
Band 12:
Clifton & Lightcliffe 'B' (John Clay)
Intro: Start isnt perfectly clean. Note at 22 out of tune. Good horns. Needs more for ff at 90. Good triplets
Scherzo: Good quavers. Note before 129 out of tune. Horns out of tune at 162. Clarity isnt there at 178. Cornet sharp at 210. 300 out of tune.
Transformation: Good horn. Cornet watch note a t 308. Good euph at 315. Too loud at 317
Meditation: Tuning is problem at 328. Try to play louder for better intonation. Good top note from euph at 348 Flugel out of tune
Apotheosis: Crochets well together at 366. Good troms and horns up to 400. Try to exaggerate cresc and dim at 400. Watch intonation at 446. Drive forward to keep the tempo
Maestoso: Good triplets. Need more for ff. Don’t lose it at 534. Good euph at 558
Vivace: Quavers aren’t together. Ending; however, is good
Overall performance: Not a bad performance just flawed by tuning and technique. For such a young band Well Done!
Alastair Field
Band 1:
Thurcroft (Ken Vernon)
Intro: Unclear cornets in first passage. Correct dynamics in the percussion however not in band
Scherzo: Good dynamics at 145, clear melody. Cornets – lots of wrong notes
Transformation: No dynamics in solo line
Meditation: Good crescendo at 336 however later dynamics are inaccurate
Apotheosis: Percussion not in time at the start, notes not accented, especially in the cornets
Maestoso: Cornet fanfare not loud enough
Vivace: Percussion and band not in time, powerful sound at the end
Overall performance: Shaky start but strong confident end.
Band 2:
Huddersfield & Ripponden (Tony Jaeger-Fozard)
Intro: Strong powerful start. Good dynamics; however, couldn’t hear timps
Scherzo: Good dynamics, Lower end of band slightly over powering
Transformation: Good euph solo – too much rubato on cornet solo
Meditation: Great dynamics 336-441 Issues in sop part
Apotheosis: Good baris and troms. Tempo a little slow – needed more speed ot meet the energy
Maestoso: cornets bluffed many notes
Vivace: timps too over powering
Overall performance: Great balance within the band – there were times when the tempo was too slow.
Band 3:
Deepcarr (Gavin Somerset)
Intro: Rushed slightly – especially the lower band
Scherzo: Cornets and lower band out of tune, band couldn’t keep up with the percussion. Melody too detached
Transformation: Good solo sections, dynamics well balanced in the band
Meditation: Good dynamics at 336. Pace slows down too much in crescendos – why?
Apotheosis: Bari and troms not clear. Good dynamics however inaccurate notes
Maestoso: Lower melody rushed too much
Vivace: Percussion led the band well
Overall performance: Many sections were too rushed. could not hear accented notes
Band 4:
Oughtibridge (Alan Coe)
Intro: Shaky start, well recovered. Good dynamics, powerful cornet fanfare
Scherzo: Clear euph passages, spilt notes in cornet – not much energy in this section
Transformation & Meditation: 309 out of tune. Good euph passages again. Tuning issues in trombones horns and cornets
Apotheosis: Tuning between trombones and baris
Maestoso & Vivace: Fanfares not in time and some wrong notes. Band overall not in time with each other
Overall performance: Many powerful places lacked energy. A couple of tuning and timing issues. Soloists did well.
Band 5:
Haworth (Charles Hindmarsh)
Intro: Tuning issues at start. Euph passage was not clear
Scherzo: Melody unclear. Lots of tuning issues, parts overcrowding each other. Good percussion
Transformation: Start was very unclear and soloists very nervous
Meditation: Soloists better in this section, percussion is good. the notes at the start of each phrase are badly delayed
Apotheosis: Great energy! Good solos. Cornets very out of tune
Maestoso & Vivace: Lots of wrong notes, percussion was good.
Overall performance: Percussion was consistently good. Lots of tuning and timing problems. Nerves got the better of the band
Band 6:
Linthwaite (G. Pulleyn)
Intro: Good start from the lower band, missed parts in the percussion. Little out of time and took a while to recover
Scherzo: Good dynamics, good percussion
Transformation: Horns and troms are playing so quiet they are struggling to play their notes
Meditation: Lower cornets were good. Upper cornets and euph are out of tune
Apotheosis: Good percussion, nice bass passage. Horn solo good. couldn’t hear back-row cornets.
Maestoso & Vivace: Ralls were too sudden. Troms were very powerful however the rest of the band couldn’t match that.
Overall performance: Tempo changes and marks were too sudden, not very good dynamics
Band 7:
Wilsden (Ken Lee)
Intro: Split notes in cornet and percussion too overpowering. Cornets out of time
Scherzo: Good timps
Transformation: Out of time snare. Tuning problems. Euph and solo cornet were good. Good dynamics.
Meditation: Lots of emotion, some tuning issues
Apotheosis: Start of section very food, cornets had lots of energy. Good dynamics
Maestoso & Vivace: Back row cornets fantastic, great trills
Overall performance: First few sections had tuning and balance issues however Apotheosis and ending had lots of energy.
Band 8:
Barnsley Metropolitan (Alex Francis)
Intro: Timp too loud, good balance within band. Great cornet solo, very powerful, don’t worry about the wrong notes. Good euph passages, horns rushed too much
Scherzo: Cornet and euph solo too detached, should be smoother. Good band dynamics
Transformation: Some wrong notes in the lower band
Meditation: Good dynamics. Lots of emotion and channelled energy
Apotheosis: Troms slightly out of tune, again great dynamics
Maestoso & Vivace: Good pace to start with. Basses form a good foundation
Overall performance: Very good! Lots of energy and emotion, few mistakes and good solos
Band 9:
Worsbrough Brass (John K. Hopkinson)
Intro: Great opening passage, good balance. Half way through, basses too quiet. Good trom fanfares. Bars 106 and 107 unclear
Scherzo: Horns a little too quiet - struggled to hear the melody. 239 onwards- some wrong notes. 281 cresc was not big enough
Transformation: Good dynamics and balance solo section were clear
Meditation: Bass drum, good dynamics. Again good solo section
Apotheosis: Section rushed too much – follow the percussion! wrong note on timp
Maestoso & Vivace: Should be a lot louder. Perfectly in time
Overall performance: Good balance however dynamics were not consistent
Band 10:
Friendly Band (Sowerby Bridge) (Colin Hardy)
Intro: end of phrases seem to drift away. Dynamics OK but could be better
Scherzo: Euph unclear and band balance is bottom heavy. Good strong pace set by percussion – well done timp!
Transformation: Horn melody was clear, cornet tuning issues
Meditation: solo uneasy in flugel.
Apotheosis: Melody not clear, tuning in back row cornets. Percussion and band was powerful half way through this section
Maestoso & Vivace: Cornets not loud enough – dynamics not good in this section – ff not mp!
Overall performance: Good start and middle however ending did not have enough energy. Percussion was consistent and the solos were good.
Band 11:
Dinnington Colliery (Jonathan Beatty)
Intro: Fantastic energy and sound. Trombones rushed slightly. Great sop melody!
Scherzo: Good crescendos and dims, snare drum slightly out of time
Transformation: Great balance, solos were good. Dynamics too small
Meditation: Cornet and euph at 340 too loud. Phrasing at 348 – gaps in phrases. Good dynamics at 353
Apotheosis: Melody is overpowered by accompaniment at start. Great dynamics half way through, fantastic energy and sound leading to next section
Maestoso & Vivace: Slick and precise, loads of energy
Overall performance: Very good! Your start and finish were superb, loads of energy. Middle section dynamics needed a bit more.
Band 12:
Clifton & Lightcliffe 'B' (John Clay)
Intro: Very bottom heavy, can’t hear cornets, not much energy, fanfares come out of nowhere
Scherzo: Some tuning issues and wrong notes, broad bass melody
Transformation: Good horn melody, broad
Meditation: Dynamics too small at 348 – good solo section just need to be a bit louder
Apotheosis: Trom phrasing could be better – lots of split notes in the band.
Maestoso & Vivace: Good pace at the end, cornets very weak. Too quiet at the end
Overall performance: A very bottom heavy band. Needs more dynamics.

Band 1:
Thurcroft (Ken Vernon)
Intro: Quiet start, powerful snare
Scherzo: Syncopated cornets – equal power in band
Transformation: Good horns
Meditation: Quiet sop at 348
Apotheosis: Quiet basses, too loud percussion
Maestoso: Strong fanfares, could do with more cornets
Vivace: Perfect syncopation
Overall performance: Strong timp solo, quiet basses , strong cornet solos
Band 2:

Intro: Strong Timps, good basses
Scherzo: Good cornet syncopation, strong euphoniums, good bass sync – needs more timps
Transformation: Basses a bit too loud
Meditation: Good cornet syncopation, quiet sop

Maestoso: Quiet cornet fanfares
Vivace: Strong finish, a bit too much timp
Overall performance: Strong cornets at times, too much power on timps, strong bass section
Band 3:
Deepcarr (Gavin Somerset)

Scherzo: Too fast trombone, weak timps
Transformation: Great cornets, smooth sound throughout the band, great basses
Meditation: Smooth basses, quiet percussion, fuzzy cornets and smooth flugel
Apotheosis: Powerful euphoniums, quiet basses, powerful solid trombones
Maestoso: powerful cornet fanfare, cornets too loud
Vivace: Band too loud for timp solo
Overall performance: Fuzzy back row cornets, timps too quiet and snare too loud. Solo cornet – good power
Band 4:

Intro: Good start, strong loud cornet fanfares
Scherzo: Great cornets, loud tambourine, quiet euphonium, very quiet percussion
Transformation: warm start, quiet basses
Meditation: quiet basses, good sop, a bit loud trombones
Apotheosis: sloppy start, powerful trombines, quiet basses, good cornets
Maestoso: powerful cornet fanfares
Vivace: great timp solo, very loud cornets
Overall performance: quiet percussion, cornets too loud, basses too quiet
Band 5:

Scherzo: band loses cornet, strong sound
Transformation: strong Bb bass, slow solo
Meditation: strong basses and sop, very quiet troms
Apotheosis: too loud percussion, syncopated basses, good syncopation at 446

Vivace: quiet timp solo
Overall performance: some sloppiness in percussion and solos at start of meditation
Band 6:

Apotheosis: Great start to section, very synced basses strong powerful sync at 446 great troms
Maestoso: Good strong fanfares
Vivace: Strong section, powerful timp ending
Overall performance: Strong percussion, strong cornets, strong trombones

Overall performance: perfect start to finish, strong and confident

Overall performance: Great syncopations, powerful percussion, all band strong and confident

Overall performance: A bit loud percussion, great sound produced

Maestoso: Loud percussion, perfect fanfares
Vivace: Powerful timp solo, perfect finish
Overall performance: Too loud at points on percussion. Quiet playing, smooth

Intro: Quiet percussion, loud euphs, quiet fanfares
Scherzo: Quiet basses, quiet euphs
Transformation: Smooth cornet solo
Meditation: quiet sop
Apotheosis: quiet snare drum, syncopated basses
Maestoso: quiet but good fanfares, good troms
Vivace: quiet percussion but very loud timp solo
Overall performance: care in percussion, strong timps, quiet cornets

Band 1:
Thurcroft (Ken Vernon)
Intro: Percussion heavy. Under Bass quaver, Staccato cornets too broad. Nice f<ff at 90

Transformation: dotted quaver – semi quaver rhythms sketchy, more bass needed. Nice cornet sound and lyrical playing. Euph – watch intonation. Generally good rhythm. Nice balance toward 328
Meditation: More back row needed. Watch phrasing carefully! Crescendo too much but well controlled and in time on dim. More sop on top G. Tuning on pause before 360
Apotheosis: Percussion not with band, sop – hold on notes for full length. Troms a broader sound needed – molto allargando – too slow.
Maestoso: Broad sounds but out of time within band
Vivace: Uncontrolled, diminishes dynamics
Overall performance: Good band sounds, watch getting rhythm together and tuning/intonations. Nice solo cornet.
Band 2:
Huddersfield & Ripponden (Tony Jaeger-Fozard)
Intro: Over struck accent on back row. Good p but sop out of tune – Out of time. Basses good sounds . Overblows f at 81. Slowed down.
Scherzo: More cornets. Too much cresc -louder mp tan p. Too loud for f at 194 but good. Tuning solo cornet. Good dynamic contrast though tuning suffered. Bass notes unclear.
Transformation: Nice lyrical sound. Solo cornet try to play smoother. Nice euph sound. Cornets a little flat.
Meditation: crescendo p was far too much in this context. Watch top note sop and flug. Sharp D’s back row
Apotheosis: Broader notes need to start but staccato too broad. Exaggerated dynamics good though tuning suffers. Why slow down in 459. ff – good balanced sound
Maestoso: Triplets not correct style. slowing down
Vivace: Unclear and rushed – should be more together
Overall performance: Tuning/intonation to be worked on . Nice sounds at time though
Band 3:
Deepcarr (Gavin Somerset)
Intro: Tuning all over the place. Notes generally together but staccato not detached especially in lower end of the band
Scherzo: Good dynamics. Quavers not always placed together. Lyrical playing needed to be smooth. 190 – notes not broad enough. Good cresc. dim. Troms at 213 should be louder.
Transformation: 308 Euph sharp on F Rhythms sketchy from solo cornet – early entry from basses
Meditation: 328 good dynamic but took a couple of bars to get the correct tempo. crescendo needs to be in context. Raw sound at mp. 348 Nice cresc but dies too quickly.
Apotheosis: Good dim Nice dynamic contrasts. Good articulation. cresc dim could be smoother. Slowed down! ff missing.
Maestoso: Quick! Cornets handle tonguing at that speed well. Unbalanced at 549
Vivace: Hurried and uncomfortable – band not fitting together.
Overall performance: Band could gel better to get a together sound. Good dynamic contrast and articulation. Tuning.
Band 4:
Oughtibridge (Alan Coe)
Intro: Staccato notes not detached. Tuning. Good quiet dynamics – front row intonation. Good triplet rhythm bad slowing down though.
Scherzo: Good detached sounds and staccato crochets. Raw sounds into 167 – overblown. Good choice to hold f down. Good cresc sfz
Transformation: Nice solo cornet sound at 306. Low band tuning our/ Good lyrical style. Euph tuning in top register. Good rhythm
Meditation: Nice band sounds – together, though lacking from cornets so not quite balanced. Crescendo well controlled. Tuning in cornet. Nice cresc dim sound
Apotheosis: Couple of bars to get into nice comfy tempo. Good dim, sounds and articulation. Full lenght top F# at 427 from sop wanted. Tuning in trom melody 459
Maestoso: Articulation could be clearer, nice sop sop sound Tempo dragged
Vivace: Good in time vivace section . Good together sound and finish
Overall performance: Good together playing. Tuning in cornets.
Band 5:
Haworth (Charles Hindmarsh)
Intro: Not together at start. Nice f, Watch basses don’t drag back – staccato could be shorter. Tuning in cornets. Bit ripe for piano. Slowed down massively – bass note lethargic
Scherzo: Cresc dim good but notes out of time. Dynamic changes consistently make notes out of time. Good bass section rhythm
Transformation: Suph and solo cornet out of sync. Rhythms off a bit. Rushed triplets and drag quavers
Meditation: Tempo pulling from areas of band. Nice control on cresc. Nice top G from sop , tuning on F. Need more production on notes from cornet
Apotheosis: Straight into tempo –good! Good dim emphasis on notes. Timing and tuning in solo passages
Maestoso: Together generally, good sound. Slowing down
Vivace: Slowing down – nice last note
Overall performance: Rhythms could be improved upon and band balance need work but good sounds
Band 6:
Linthwaite (G. Pulleyn)
Intro: Stylish start but getting into tempo. Staccato notes could be shorted. Tuning in sop. Good euph section lovely bass sounds.
Scherzo: Staccato notes need to be shorter to be together. Good dynamics – not overblown – in time
Transformation: Tuning in sop but dood solo cornet and euph. Good rhythmic qualities
Meditation: Good together band sound. Nice cresc, p. Tuning discrepancies in chord texture at 354
Apotheosis: Overblown for f at 360. Tight and together band sound. well controlled in smaller dynamics. Nicely articulated parts. Nice bass end sounds – good broad sounds
Maestoso: Front/back row cornets lose tuning. too abrasive. Takes a while to settle into tempo
Vivace: Together nice length of notes
Overall performance: Good sounds, especially in lower band. Toghther generally, well done
Band 7:
Wilsden (Ken Lee)
Intro: Notes too lengthy – not fully in context. Nice p sounds but overblown f at 81. Triplets tongued - well done. Cornets trying to rush on .. . Well balanced sounds but not together.
Scherzo: Rhythms are making sense now. Nice dynamic range. Snare drum drags out a little bit. Nice lyrical sound with contrasting staccato notes. Back row and Baris intonation and tuning. Nice sound
Transformation: Semis rushed. Cornet and Euph tuning on f. Nice chord sound
Meditation: Nice mp sounds but tuning in horns and back row don’t blend enough. Nice cresc dim. Flug watch intonation
Apotheosis: Good band sound, little loud for f but nice mf. Sluggish dynamics but good articulation
Maestoso: Good tempo and style, kept it motoring, good! Nicely placed quavers, in tempo and together. Great sound
Vivace: lost some dynamics . well played and together for the tempo.
Overall performance: Good balance and band sound., articulation varied, better in quicker movements
Band 8:
Barnsley Metropolitan (Alex Francis)
Intro: Almost straight into tempo. Good dynamic range. Watch tuning generally in higher register. Staccato notes good and in context of piece. Good sop and underneath cornet part.
Scherzo: Nice staccato sounds. Generally together and balanced with well graded dynamics. Well done. When going for quieter dynamics dont go out of tune. Basses fudge some quavers
Transformation: Musically nice. Nice sop. Dont worry solo cornets about split – nice sounds, good rhythms. Nice euph sound in time, nice accompaniment, lyrical.
Meditation: Lovely lush chords sounds. Cresc p good contrast. Cornet and euph well together. Watch front row tuning. Lovely warm rich sounds made by sop on top.
Apotheosis: Good together sounds and accents. Nice sop Nice bass section sounds and bass end of the band
Maestoso: Stylish front row and sop. Nicely kept together. Well controlled quaver movements, not rushing
Vivace: Well controlled and totally together, nice balanced sound to finish.
Overall performance: Good , tight, together. Hard to top, well done!
Band 9:
Worsbrough Brass (John K. Hopkinson)
Intro: Accents on right beats but takes a while to find comfortable tempo. Nice ps in context. Good lyrical playing with contrasting staccato notes, good dynamic cotnrast. Sop just watch top register
Scherzo: Good staccato playing from front row. Careful not to rush with semis into quavers. Good articulation. Good transitions between lyrical and staccato. Good balance and band sound/ Nice sfz, not overblown. Cresc dim good.
Transformation: Nice sop apart from G# - cornet a little abrasive – nice euph (keep the air blowing straight through though) Works together nicely and accompaniments nicely balanced
Meditation: Nice chordal sounds and together, lovely back row (blending) cresc p not too much and in context – nice.
Apotheosis: Almost all together. Good loud sound, not overblown – good shock notes. Cresc Dim well controlled – no loss of tuning. Good articulation
Maestoso: Good big sound – well balanced. Well controlled quavers at tempo with percussion driving through
Vivace: Well together but fell apart a bit, split ending sadly.
Overall performance: Together , good balance, tuning nice,
Band 10:
Friendly Band (Sowerby Bridge) (Colin Hardy)
Intro: Took a while to settle into tempo. Tuning in sop. Nice lyrical playing contrasted by good staccato notes. Good nice lyrical sound but cornet triplets are lost.
Scherzo: Cornets again drowned out. Lengthy staccato notes and back row out of une but nice euphs and baris. Cresc Dim nice and not over exaggerated. Nice balanced sound, tuning in flug
Transformation: Nice solo cornet sounds. Sop slightly out. Euphs and baris watch intonation
Meditation: Nicely balanced homophony – nicely balanced back row. Nice sounds and follwing the beats. Tuning in sop. Flug more confidence needed.
Apotheosis: More definition of accents needed but dynamic is good and everything is nicely together. Cresc Dim needs to be more controlled. Sop needs to really pump through air in upper register. Good balance and sound
Maestoso: Nicely settled in maestoso – could be a grander sound if everyone was together. Fell apart slightly
Vivace: Not always together. Staccato could be more detached
Overall performance: Together most of the time, some tuning in sop but band nice
Band 11:
Dinnington Colliery (Jonathan Beatty)
Intro: Feels rushed to open and euphs and baris drag in quavers – need to be more detached. Nice band sound. Well balanced good. textures- lyrical and more staccato. Good dynamic contrast, good sop
Scherzo: Cornets lost slightly but crescendo bring through. Good attention to articulation. Smashing balance and good contrast between smooth and staccato sections. Wobbles 209 ish . Good big sounds. Everything fits well and stylishly
Transformation: Flawless start – nice sop , good solo cornet and euph. Nice euph sound if a little over the top. Work nicely together and band a good level.
Meditation: Lovely chordal sounds – mostly in tune. Lovely crsc to warm sound. Cornet and bari out
Apotheosis: Straight into right temp. Percussion couple of misplaced notes. Good dynamic range Good balanced sound Good bass end sound, together and right
Maestoso: Brilliant full sounds and good cornet lines. Tight and together
Vivace: Perfectly together
Overall performance: Brilliant sound and great interpretation. Be proud!
Band 12:
Clifton & Lightcliffe 'B' (John Clay)
Intro: Staccato notes not detached enough. Not much dynamic contrast and tuning in mid band. Staccato and legato not contrasting enough. Tongue more on staccato. Nice euph
Scherzo: Cornets overwhelmed – Flug watch note production. Articulation good Nice broad sounds but not quite connecting band.
Transformation: Good solo cornet sound. Nice chordal texture Rhythm good in principal cornet and euph
Meditation: Nice texture int eh accompanying chords again. Not enough cresc and dim. Dont hear sop 348/9 and texture harmony lost
Apotheosis: Took time to settle and slowed down. Articulation not clean but dynamic contrast better. Top half of band sound lost
Maestoso: Feels rushed and front row cant tongue fast enough. Odd tempo.
Vivace: Not together and not clean on quaver articulation. Nice final sound
Overall performance: Togetherness at times. Tuning generally good nice sound
