Gabriel's horn sounded to prize winning effect

York Railway Institute Band's solo horn player Gabriel Snowden has become the first recipient of the Trevor Bousfield Cup following his performance at the band's recent Section, Solo & Ensemble Contest.

Memory

The prize has been sponsored by Brian Bousfield in memory of his twin brother Trevor, a former Musical Director of York Railway Institute Band and recognises the efforts of the most promising player aged 17 years and under.

Trevor devoted much of his time teaching his two talented sons, Ian and Howard in art of solo playing.

Gabriel has incredible musical potential with a purity of tone and technique that is a credit to his teachers and is being nurtured by the Band. He is a very worthy first recipient of this awardBand Chairman, Clive Marshall

Warm and tender

Gabriel performed a spellbinding rendition of 'On My Own' from 'Les Miserables' that found favour with adjudicator Dr Alasdair Jamieson from Durham University who later said that his performance was 'very assured, warm and tender' — elements that would have delighted Trevor himself.

Band Chairman Clive Marshall presented Gabriel with his prize and added: "Gabriel has incredible musical potential with a purity of tone and technique that is a credit to his teachers and is being nurtured by the Band. He is a very worthy first recipient of this award."
