Latest recruits impress with Yorkshire Youth Band

There were eight new members enjoying their musical experience with the Yorkshire Youth Band last weekend.

The youth band players enjoyed their musical work under the baton of Black Dyke stars such as Brett Baker

The talented youngsters of the Yorkshire Youth Band enjoyed a menu of hard work, great music and plenty of fun on their latest gathering in Saddleworth on the weekend.

Music performed included 'Repton Fantasy' by Jonathan Bates, Peter Graham's 'Heroes of the North' and Philip Harper's 'Greatest Storyteller'.

Dyke stars

Led by Black Dyke Band Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs, and helped by the continued support of Besson Musical Instruments, the course was conducted by Brett Baker and Richard Marshall assisted by Black Dyke stars Dan Thomas, Siobhan Bates, Matt Routley, Dave Smith, John O'Brien and Neil Edwards.

Over 50 young musicians took part, with the logistics and organisation expertly handled by Course Administrators Alison and Rebecca Childs.

After a morning of sectional rehearsals and full band, the students were involved in a masterclass and workshop which included solo playing with tips and advice on preparation, breathing, and overcoming nerves, then a final rehearsal before the short concert for parents and friends.

Rewarding experience

Richard Marshall was certainly impressed by the youngsters, as he told 4BR: "The way they want to learn and tackle the new music is amazing. That's what makes the Yorkshire Youth Band such a rewarding experience — everyone benefits, especially the players who go back to their own bands with such enthusiasm."

Each course consists of massed warm-ups, sectionals, full band, masterclass, Q&A sessions, tutoring and advice, plus an end of day concert.

It's always wonderful to welcome new players and to see them enjoying the band with an atmosphere that is inclusive and full of encouragementAlison Childs

New members

Meanwhile, Alison Childs told 4BR that she was especially delighted that a further eight new members have joined the band this year. "It's always wonderful to welcome new players and to see them enjoying the band with an atmosphere that is inclusive and full of encouragement.

The Yorkshire Youth Band continues to go from strength to strength as the youngsters develop and with exciting things to look forward to such as the Brass Festival, with the support of Besson Musical Instruments we can help the future stars reach their potential."
