The members of Helston Town recently marked the retirement of their stalwart former player Russell Harvey after an incredible 80 and a half years of dedication and commitment to the Cornish band.
The 91 year old retired postal manager joined the band alongside his brother when it reformed after the war in 1944, whilst his wife Veronica, later supported him from the sidelines. Their sons, Malcolm and Ian, both played alongside him — Ian, still in the ranks today.
Inspiration
The band stated: "Russell has been a constant source of inspiration throughout the decades with his dedication to his lifelong interest. He has played on 76 Flora Days, with only National Service and Covid stopping him."
Recognition
Russell has received special Brass Bands England and Cornwall Brass Band Association awards, and in 2016, was recognised by Gorsedh Kernow for his contribution to local music.
Although he has now stepped down, he stated that as a Life Member he will continue to take a keen interest in the band and will also stay involved socially. He plans to keep practicing his cornet and will play at Christmas and on Flora Day.
Humbled
The band added: "We are humbled by Russell's achievement, which really is quite extraordinary.
Indeed, there aren't many bandspeople that can even say that they have been playing in brass bands for more than 80 years, let alone that this has been continuous service to one organisation."
