'Discovering Wilfred Heaton', the new CD of previously unrecorded music by the enigmatic composer has gained critical acclaim on its recent release.
The nine works have been arranged and curated by Paul Hindmarsh as one of the final elements of his extensive research into Heaton's life and work.
Released on the Divine Art label, it features performances from Murray McLachlan (piano), James Gilchrist (tenor), Rose McLachlan (piano) and Alex Jakeman (flute) and was recorded at Stoller Hall at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester.
Remarkable achievement
In an extensive review for the influential on-line classical music website, MusicWeb International, critic John Quinn said that the composer had been "exceptionally well served in this fascinating release", and calling his 'Piano Sonata', "a remarkable achievement" amid a series of "uniformly excellent" performances.
The release adds to the huge amount of research and publication Paul Hindmarsh has undertaken in recent years, which has also gained critical appreciation — incouding his book, 'Wilfred Heaton, His Life, His Music'.
