13 year old euphonium player Neythan Powell-Jones has been gifted a brand new Adams euphonium by a fellow player who was "moved to tears" by his playing.
Neythen, from Liskeard, Cornwall is a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and has made a name for himself in his local area after winning the award as 'Most Promising Player' at the Saltash Music Festival four times.
Fellow player
He met Brian Routledge, 92, when they played alongside each other in the Saltash Town Band.
And now the retired police officer, who has terminal cancer, said he took "immense pleasure" in purchasing the £8,500 instrument for Neythan to help develop his talent in future years.
Very generous
Neythen said the instrument was "a very generous gift", which has already been put to great use with his performances for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain on their recent Easter course, as well as with Bodmin Town Band and St Austell Youth Band.
Mr Routledge told a BBC reporter that; "To suddenly hear a child of that age playing like he did...was a revelation. I couldn't believe it."
Knowing of his diagnosis he added: "I realised that probably it's beginning of the end. I thought Neythen won't want my Yamaha and I thought well I'd still like to do something.
My own sons told to me why don't you spend your money. I found the pleasure, the immense pleasure it gave me to give this to Neythen".
