Dobcross Youth Band's appearance at the Saddleworth Whit Friday contests this year was not only a successful occasion, but was also one marked with extra personal meaning.
Rosemary Whiffin, their much-loved librarian passed away last year. Rosemary was dedicated to the band and her role for over 34 years and left a huge hole in the hearts of everyone.
Tribute
Before the band headed to the contests, she was fondly remembered during a brief service in the Band Club where past band members all noted.
In a touching tribute, members of the band wore a flower adorned with sprigs of rosemary — a wonderfully meaningful gesture for a woman who gave so much to so many young musicians.
Cornet donation
Peter Whiffin, Rosemary's husband, later said: "After Rosemary died, her brother made a very generous donation to the band in her memory which has been used to purchase a Besson Sovereign cornet.
It's been engraved as a lasting reminder of how much she gave to Dobcross Youth Band."
Principal use
The instrument will be played by principal cornet player Bethany Oliver, who becomes its first proud custodian.
Youth Band Secretary Jenny Wood added: "This year's Whit Friday had extra meaning. Rosemary's thoughtfulness, kindness, care and attention to detail ensured that all our children could be reassured and certain of her care and dedication."
