The death has been announced of Alan Needham.

The death has been reported of the highly respected bandsman Alan Needham following a bravely fought and inspirational battle against cancer. He passed away on January 2nd, aged 65.

Well known throughout the banding world, he was presented with the 2015 Butlins Excellence Award in recognition of half a century of loyal and dedicated service to the brass band movement — over 40 of which were spent with the Rossington Band.

Success

A gifted player, he also gained success as a conductor working with the likes of Dronfield, Market Rasen and Whitwell, winning the Fourth Section Bolsover Entertainment title with Market Rasen in 2012 as well as gaining podium finishes at Butlins, the Midlands Regional Championships, Buxton, Pontins and the NEDBBA contests.

The former civil servant was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in January 2014 and was initially given just six months to live.

The Brain Tumour Research charity called him, 'a totally inspiring supporter', with his 'Wear a Hat' initiative drawing support from throughout the brass band community4BR

Amazing spirit

However, his amazing spirit and zest for life saw him undergo surgery whilst still awake, whilst he then set about helping to raise over £21,000 for others suffering from the same condition.

The Brain Tumour Research charity called him, 'a totally inspiring supporter', with his 'Wear a Hat' initiative drawing support from throughout the brass band community.

Further details will be published when received.
