Tylorstown end emotional year on a high

The Tylorstown Band has ended an emotional year on a high after becoming joint Welsh League champion.

An emotional year ended on a high for Angela Westacott and Tylorstown Band.

Following a year in which they were shocked by the tragic death of one of their most popular players, Tylorstown Band rounded off 2016 with cause for celebration after they were declared joint Welsh League Champions.

It is the first time in the band's history that they have won the top section honour, which they will share with 2015 winner Llwydcoed.

Thrilling climax

Tylorstown won a thrilling final leg of the series at the recent Merthyr Tydfil contest with their performance of 'Paganini Variations' under the direction of MD, Gary Davies to capture their share of the imposing trophy.

The memorable day was also added to by the band's tuba team taking the 'Best Basses' award and solo euphonium Angela Westacott claiming the accolade of 'Best Instrumentalist' (above).

Emotional year

A very proud MD told 4BR: "2016 has been an extremely emotional year, having lost our friend and colleague Terry Hill who was killed in a car accident on his way home from rehearsal. To win the Welsh League title was a fantastic achievement and a tribute to him.

Ever since every contest recalls the great memories of our friendship and the dedication that Terry had towards banding. My appreciation goes to all my players who dedicated that winning performance to someone who will never be replaced."

The band will be busy as always with concerts and events, so there is much to look forward to in 2017, even though there is plenty never to forget from 2016MD, Gary Davies

New players

Time does move on however, and the band have been delighted to have been able to secure the services of two players who knew Terry well — Neil Blockley on cornet and Barry John on Bass Trombone.

Gary added: "Christmas will be a difficult time for the family and all our thoughts will be with them. The band will be busy as always with concerts and events, so there is much to look forward to in 2017, even though there is plenty never to forget from 2016."
