The annual Skunkworks Community Bright Brass & Percussion Summer Intensive was recently held over an exciting week of Australian music making at the Bright Chalet in Bright, Victoria.
And it was certainly an event with its own unique charms to accompany the music — including a snake bite, a suspected DVT, cases of heat stress, gastroenteritis and bushfires.
Incredible success
However, as 4BR was told, thanks to strong safety planning, calm leadership, and an extraordinary support team, it was still an incredible success.
The week was led by conductor David Bremner who reflected on the experience by saying: "Intensive' was the right word to describe things — it really was an awesome week.
I had a blast working with these talented and motivated young musicians, and I left feeling incredibly inspired about the future of banding in Australasia. Skunkworks Community is such an inspiring and motivated organisation that provides these musicians with exceptional experiences and learning opportunities."
With tutors drawn from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the New South Wales Police Band, D2 Drumline, and other experienced registered educators, participants benefited from outstanding instruction across all areas of brass, percussion, and musicianship.
Over 100 participants
Skunkworks director, Phillipa Edwards OAM added: "With more than 100 participants spread across three separate bands, alongside electives including choir, jazz band, low brass ensemble, and high brass ensemble, we were able to offer depth, challenge, and variety for every musician."
Highlights of the week included the much-loved Annual Race Around the World, solo and ensemble nights, and the always-anticipated Red Faces on Friday evening.
Phillipa added: "The week culminated in a vibrant public concert at the local park, proudly showcasing the achievements of the players to hundreds of people before the iconic annual Bright Duck Race to round off a fitting celebration of music, community, and young talent and fearless, talent!"
