Brass Attack bring music to life for preschool children

A great BBC childen's programme recently featured young brass players from the Watford area bringing music to life for a partially sighted young girl and her mum.

CBeebies
The young players had a great time performing on the Melody & Friends CBeebies programme.

A fantastic group of young brass playing children from primary schools in the Watford area recently enjoyed making their television debuts on the BBC.

The 'Brass Attack' group from the Watford School of Music was featured on the popular CBeebies programme called 'Melody and Friends' — a show designed to introduce preschool children to classical music.

Melody and mum

On it, a young partially sighted girl called Melody and her mum meet children who all play different musical instruments — enabling her to let her mind run free with ideas and images.

For this programme it was the turn of the brass — with the 'Brass Attack' group led by their inspirational tutor Paul Fisher. The ensemble played two Alan Fernie arrangements of 'Colonel Bogey' and 'Odd Socks' as Melody's imagination takes her on a cartoon trip to a day out at the fair and on a car ride.

Joys of music

Paul told 4BR: "It's a great programme that does so much to introduce the youngest children to the joys and fun of music — and classical music at that. The series is so well produced and put together.

The children had a simply brilliant time and were made to feel at ease. They loved performing and being in front of the cameras."

Encourage

Paul added: "Opportunities such as this can inspire children both to play and to enjoy just listening to music.

The group had an incredible experience, and it will hopefully encourage others to take up brass playing!"
